Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
936 PM PDT Tue Aug 12 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Above average temperatures will continue for inland areas through
Wednesday with a gradual cooling expected Thursday through Saturday.
A warming trend will return for early next week. Breezy westerly
winds expected on the desert mountain slopes into the deserts each
afternoon/early evening. Low clouds will be persistent for the coast
and western valleys each night and morning, becoming more widespread
Friday into the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Update: The latest GOES-18 Night Fog imagery shows that low level
clouds have infiltrated all coastal areas of the CWA, with the
exception of northern Orange County. Some of the marine layer is
also penetrating into portions of the inland areas of San Diego
county and will continue to fill in for some of the lower
elevations. Given how low bases are, this will likely not make it
into the Inland Empire. Tomorrow will begin a gradual cooldown that
will continue throughout the rest of the work week, and then perhaps
only a slight warm up over the upcoming weekend, although
temperatures will be on the cooler side, compared to the averages
for this time of year. The troughing upstream, which will slowly
continue to advance in towards SoCal, will help to suppress
monsoonal moisture and keep it confined towards the east, with dry
conditions lasting into early next week. That being said, some of
the ensemble members were hinting at a slight chance of
precipitation for the mountains later this week, although this is
likely a result with the trough allowing for the marine layer to
thicken and lower levels overall becoming saturated, allowing for
some light rain and/or drizzle to be possible, but not likely.

(Previous discussion submitted at 127 PM):

At 1 PM, temperatures were running up to 5 degrees cooler than this
time yesterday for the inland valleys, with some places along the
coast a degree or two warmer. The low deserts are 2 to 5 degrees
cooler than this time yesterday. Highs tomorrow are expected to be a
few degrees cooler than normal for most places west of the
mountains, but still up to 5 degrees above average for the deserts.
Low clouds this afternoon are locally lingering at area beaches. Low
clouds and fog are expected to spread back inland overnight,
reaching into the western valleys.

An upper level trough will settles over the West Coast on Thursday.
The trough is expected to remain in place into early next week. This
will result in below average temperatures for the end of the week
along with breezy westerly winds on the desert mountain slopes into
the deserts and a deeper marine layer.

Early next week the ridge of high pressure to our east may begin to
strengthen and move back towards Southern California. That will
bring another round of gradual warming Sunday through Tuesday. There
remains some uncertainty in the position of the ridge as it settles
over the desert southwest. The overall position of the ridge will
determine how hot it will get and if any monsoonal moisture will be
allowed into our area. Latest ensemble guidance does not have any
precipitable water increases or notable precipitation chances until
at least the end of next week.&&

.AVIATION...
130400Z...Coasts/Valleys...Low clouds based at 900-1300ft MSL have
pushed ashore this evening, bringing CIGs to all 3 coastal TAF
sites. Overnight these, clouds will fill through about 15 miles
inland, with bases settling down to 700-1100ft MSL by 09-12z
Wednesday. VIS restrictions 2-5 SM possible across higher terrain
and locally within valleys. Clouds scatter back to the coasts 16-18z
Wednesday morning. VFR conditions prevail thereafter into the
afternoon, with marine clouds staying offshore. These clouds will
push back ashore by 02-04z Thursday with similar bases.

Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear and VFR conditions continue through
Wednesday evening.

&&

.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Saturday.

&&
